List Management

What information does Subscriber maintain about those who sign up?

M5 Subscriber always maintains the email address, current subscription status, date of last update, and IP address used for the last update for each one of your list members. Additionally, you can collect and maintain separate information as well.

What prevents people from signing up other people to my email list?

M5 Subscriber confirms via email all changes to a list member's data, including subscription, but not including unsubscription. It is possible for someone to unsubscribe any email address just by knowing the email address, but it is not possible for someone to subscribe any email address unless they have access to the email for that address.

M5 Subscriber also has technology to prevent our service being used to send someone else an excessive number of subscription confirmation requests as a form of mail-bombing.

What happens to unsubscribe requests? Do they persist in the database?

While you can easily purge unsubscribed members from your list, we recommend that you keep a record of those who have unsubscribed. This is so that you can make sure and avoid sending them mail again unless they re-subscribe. M5 Subscriber does keep around unsubscribe requests indefinitely.

Privacy

Can I share my subscribers with other companies or affiliates?

You own your subscriber list. We do not own it. However, we do not like the sharing of subscription lists and think that's bad business practice. Please don't. We can't stop you, but we do advise you to publish and stick to your own privacy policies. If you are collecting email addresses for sale, note that this practice is expressly forbidden by our usage agreement. Do not use our service if you are wanting to resell your email list and have nothing to offer your subscribers other than a bunch of marketing and promotional email targeted by you and sent by other people.

Does Mach5 share my subscriber list with anyone or use it in any way?

Never. We maintain the data on our server for your use only. We will not share your account information with anyone else, either, including our affiliates or partners, except as needed to provide you with your service.

Can I upload a purchased email list to M5 Subscriber?

NO. This is a violation of our license agreement.

Can I email my non-confirmed or purchased opt-in list and ask for confirmation through M5 Subscriber?

Purchased? NO, you cannot use M5 Subscriber to clear up confirmation of an existing email list if it contains recipient email addresses that you did not directly obtain through your own business operations. Non-confirmed? You can upload your existing customer or subscriber list to M5 Subscriber, however, as long as it does not contain purchased email addresses and as long as your list contains addresses of people who may expect to receive email from you. You must have a prior business relationship with all recipients of email containing our Mach5 trademark (including in our URL).

Account Details and Capacity Limitations

I want to manage over 100,000 contacts. What tool do I use?

If your list is that large, you should really be maintaining the list on your own website. We may provide our Mach5 Subscriber system to you to run on your own server. Write us for details.

What happens to my data if I close my account?

Download your data at any time. If you close your account, we may delete your data.

What happens to subscription requests if I am at capacity?

You will receive an email containing the requestor's data, but the data will not be added to your account. You can add it yourself manually, later, after you add more capacity.

Technical Details

How does Mach5 Subscriber track email views?

We generate a random number which uniquely identifies each entry in your database, and provide a very small image with this number in the name of the file on our web server that you can put into your emails. The tracking image link does not contain any query string parameters or email addresses or anything that might increase a message's spam score.

Please note that many email clients do not open or display graphics by default, and so there is no way to track when these emails are viewed. However, if your recipient clicks through a link on one of these emails (and we are tracking the clickthrough), then that action will also count as an email view.

How does Mach5 Subscriber track clickthroughs in emails?

M5 Subscriber records campaigns and tracked URLs and redirects the traffic to a URL on our site back to yours. During the redirection, we count the click and record it in the recipient's record. The Mach5 URLs are individually generated html pages with no query string values or variables on them.

What about auto-form-fill spam on my subscription forms or mail bombing from them?

Auto Form SPAM is a real problem, but M5 Subscriber includes some technology to prevent auto-form-fill spam. If you start getting some, please let us know so we can tune our technology. Our forms also have technology to prevent them being used to send unsuspecting recipients large amounts of false subscription confirmation requests.
